The demo recording was done "live" in the band's basement studio in the spring of 1996.  The recording techniques used were crude, but somewhat effective.  The drums were miked with 3 dynamic mics (a Shure 57 in the kick, a 58 on the snare placed to get some hi-hat as well, and another 58 on the toms), and an overhead condenser mic (AKG 3000B).  These were all combined to 2 tracks on a Tascam 38 1/2" 8-channel recorder, thus achieving a stereo image.  The bass went direct on to tape using a dbx compressor.  The guitar was tracked direct from the outputs of Steve's Korg A4 processor (in stereo) with the intention of re-tracking later using his amp and a couple of Shure 57's.  We ran out of time (we dedicated one Saturday afternoon to the project!) and the guitar heard on the demo is this original setup.  The keys were played real-time into an Atari 1040ST computer using Hybrid Arts sequencing software and synced to the tape using a SMPTE stripe on channel 8.  During mix-down, the computer "played" the keyboards directly into the mix, cued by the sync track, thus saving tape tracks for the vocals.  A "scratch" lead vocal was recorded (quietly, as to not bleed into the drum mics) using a Shure 58.  It was replaced with the actual vocals heard in the demo on a second pass, using an AKG 3000B condenser mic through a Furman Comp/Limiter set on infinite limiting.  The backup vocals were recorded on the remaining channel using the same vocal setup with 2 AKG condensers.  The vocals were then processed using an Alesis Micro-Verb digital reverb unit behind a Roland D-3000 digital delay (used for greater "pre-delay" on the reverb signal).  All the instrument tracks were live takes, the vocal dubs were also complete, live performances.  We hope you like it!  Give us your feedback via E-Mail (Click Here)
